Abnormal Southerly Jet Stream to blame? Pressure from tourism, bad planning laws and enforcement (because that will hold on "progress"), cutting down trees, building over water streams, flood plains and even over small rivers that were also used to dump rubbish. Some of this can clearly be seen on this satellite image [1]. Finally constantly ignoring people that have been warning about the likelihood of an event like this for years, they were labelled "alarmists" and "Luddites". Of course, it is much easier to blame the weather. That may be the case but the jet steram surely highlighted this problem,
because its the first we've heard of it. "ldpc" wrote in message ... Lawrence Jenkins wrote: Abnormal Southerly Jet Stream to blame? Seems so http://www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/jetstream.asp Nope. Of course, because in the past there was much less people, less tourism and less construction. Some impressive images of the flood, in Funchal: http://www.meteopt.com/forum/seguimento-meteorologico/seguimento-acores-madeira-fevereiro-2010-a-4189-33.html#post199928 Notice the brown water/mud, a lot of top soil is being washed into the sea, accelerated soil erosion is taking place. |

I don't wish to seem sordid, interjecting comments on topic and all that but a 60 mph wind on a volcano is likely to remove quite a gradient. I wonder how they reckon the disaster isn't as bad as the one in 1993 when thirty less people died in that. Are these Arabic Numerals or something? I was never any good at maths. |
