Default Russian heat wave

I realise this is a bit offtopic for this NG but I'm not sure where else
I could ask. I'm just wondering if anyone knows the reason for the current
russian heatwave and whether its related to the overactive monsoon in
pakistan?

Its all caused by AGW.

That's why there has been an exceptional cold spell further to the east

It was quoted on the news that it was the 'officially' the worst
heatwave for 1000 years.
Hmmmm.....
I think somebody has been playing around with return periods
and using perhaps 100 years worth of actual data, pushed the
concept *way* beyond where it was ever intended to go....

Well Col, I think you have just given the best example of denialism I
have come across recently. The Russians are saying it is the worst
heat wave in 1,000 years but you are denying that is correct.
Presumably your disbelief is due to your blind faith that mankind can
not be destroying the planet. Well the Moscow heat wave is the worst
ever recorded, and it is a symptom of man made climate change, and if
no action is taken eventually this planet will be uninhabitable.

See http://en.rian.ru/russia/20100809/160128496.html

Cheers, Alastair.

Moscow Max/Min temperatures 1st to the 8th August 2010
30.7°C 36.9°C 34.8°C 37.2°C 36.6°C 37.3°C 35.1°C 36.1°C
19.3°C 20.1°C 21.0°C 24.4°C 22.2°C 23.5°C 20.5°C 21.3°C

Quite unprecedented for Moscow.

Eh?
I was merely commenting that I couldn't see how 'The worst heatwave
for 1000 years' could be arrived at with any degree of accuracy using
any records we have today. And if it was deduced by extrapolating
the records we do have and via return periods, it must be statistics
abuse of the highest order.

I wasn't even commenting on climate change, let alone denying it just
the way such a statement could be deduced.

Col,

I "found" the file after clicking on the link from your message, and I have
to say that a paragraph near the top suggests that the claim does not arise
from a confusion with a "once in a thousand years event":

"We have an 'archive' of abnormal weather situations stretching over a
thousand years. It is possible to say there was nothing similar to this on
the territory of Russia during the last one thousand years in regard to the
heat," Alexander Frolov said.

I am not implying that the claim is accurate.

Regards, Roger
