Default (WR&OBS) Copley 10/12 17cm, falling and good riddance

Hi, All,

The thawing wind continues. Down to 17cm snow now and melting fast.
Damage / inconvenience includes broken soil thermometer (Met O
replacement on the way), broken gutters, frost heave so garage and
shed doors will not open, cracked road surfaces, damaged pavings,
damaged kerbs from snow ploughs etc, etc.
But it’s going (:0) Could even get the car out tonight and give Jeepy
a rest until the next lot (never far away in these parts in winter)
Swmbo can get out to places without me now!!
Cold and snow are great aren’t they? They can really get you down.

Hello, Ken.

I recall frost heave affecting my gatepost and porch in the north-east
of England in December 1981. The concrete drive cracked along its
length and the LH gatepost brick pier rose a full 6" (completely
vertically), but the RH one stayed where it was, so the gates would
close but wouldn't catch shut. My porch door kept sticking open so
for 3-4 days running I had to keep planing more off it to get it to
close properly at night.

A few days after the cold spell ended, the gatepost went back to
exactly where it had been and so did the porch doorframe - but in the
latter case I was left with a dirty big gap along the top where I'd
been planing it. The wind was now whistling through it, unabashed, so
I had to buy a new one.

I'd never seen the effect before (or since) but I'll be much more wary
of it now and how I tackle it, especially the way this winter is
beginning to shape-up.

Keep well, keep warm.

- Tom.

Hi, Tom,
It happens most winters with my garage doors. The slabs outside rise
up and the doors won't open. I've sawn the bottom off but there is a
limit to that. I've cut the concrete back, but obviously not enough.
This summer I'll chop back more.
The back street looks like a battle zone now as flagstones rise up at
different angles. Hopefully all will go back down as this thaw starts
to bite.
Here's hoping for a break from the cold, as you know it can be a tad
nasty in these parts
Best wishes,
Ken
