The Kinloss and Lossiemouth figures are particularly remarkable as,
assuming they come from the RAF bases at those places, they are from
within a couple of miles of the coast of the Moray Firth.

Altnaharra -15.8 C,

I noted that in the other thread, but it seems slightly odd. It
appears on Roger Brugge's page under "12 hour values ending 1800GMT"
Here are the hourly readings from 6am to 6pm:

22.12.2010 18:00:00 -18,6
22.12.2010 17:00:00 -19,9
22.12.2010 16:00:00 -18,8
22.12.2010 15:00:00 -18,8
22.12.2010 14:00:00 -17,5
22.12.2010 13:00:00 -17,7
22.12.2010 12:00:00 -17,5
22.12.2010 11:00:00 -20,2
22.12.2010 10:00:00 -20,3
22.12.2010 09:00:00 -20,2
22.12.2010 08:00:00 -20,1
22.12.2010 07:00:00 -19,9
22.12.2010 06:00:00 -19,7

It seems like quite a jump to reach -15.8C when the highest hourly
figure was -17.5C (twice) especially as it seems to have been fairly
flat most of the day. I suppose it could have come in that large rise
between 11am and noon.

Is it just a coincidence that -15.8C was the hourly figure for 5pm
yesterday?

Ronaldsway has mysteriously reported a maximum of over 20°C several times
recently.

They do not appear in the OGIMET list however
http://www.ogimet.com/cgi-bin/gsynre...min=0&ndays=30

Actual maximum today seems to have been 2.0°C.

Interesting, RK.

I wonder if Colin could clarify which periods are covered by the night
minimum and daily maximum figures. Do the daily figures represent a 24-hour
period?

Regards, Roger

They are the figures reported in the SYNOPs at 06.00 GMT and 18.00 GMT -
minimum covers 12 hours ending 06.00 and maximum covers 12 hours ending
18.00.

Thanks. Looks like a genuine temperature rise then around midday.
(There's just been another jump of 4.5C between 2100 and 2200: now up
to -14.0C!)

The figures have to be treated with some caution as they are not comparable to
the "standard" reporting periods of 0900-0900z or 0900-2100 (day max) and
2100-0900 (night min). In particular, in winter the minimum temperature often
occurs after 0600z and will therefore not be reported in the SYNOPs.

Thanks Colin. It is during periods like this when the actual period covered
by the data becomes significant.

Best regards, Roger
