.... Subscribers will already be aware of this, but others may want to
beg, borrow or ... otherwise obtain a copy of the January issue of "Weather": for many here it will make mouth-watering reading! The issue is dedicated to the notable events of winter 2009/10 and is obviously interesting for that fact alone, but there is an article by Bill Pike and Jonathan Webb which reviews "snowfalls associated with cold pools in southern Britain". As well as some interesting background history, there is a useful - dare I suggest indispensable - listing of heavy snowfall associated with deep cold air features to affect southern Britain since the start of regular analysis of total thickness (TTHK 500-1000hPa) in the 1940s. Of particular interest is that for each event, the lowest (analysed) TTHK is given - something that often gets asked in this forum.
