looks like all our jan/feb cold turned up in dec.cant grumble after that
epic month..... UK Outlook for Thursday 17 Feb 2011 to Thursday 3 Mar 2011: The period should start relatively wet and unsettled in the north and west, with drier conditions generally in the south and east. The mainly southerly flow continues though throughout. Temperatures display a north-south split with respect to average conditions, with northern Scotland seeing above average temperatures, while the south of England and Wales are nearer normal. After a wet start for some regions rainfall amounts for the period look to settle down to become below average for much of the country, with the east of England perhaps nearer normal. Sunshine amounts should to be typical for February, though perhaps slightly above average sunshine hours in the north of Scotland. Updated: 1222 on Wed 2 Feb 2011 |

There comes a point when enough is enough, and now enough is enough, your

How funny, I made the word up for you, but since you brought the dictionary
up, the only entry I could find of it was in the urban dictionary. Perhaps Snoop Dog has heard of Western Sky before? Or maybe Western Sky Smegmatonic is about to release the single "It's never bitter, never mind but my hero is Gary Glitter"? ![]() looks like all our jan/feb cold turned up in dec.cant grumble after that epic month..... Winter over then?? I think most of us expected it! Quite amazing really, one historically cold month, one boringly average month and one fairly mild month (to come). So December was Winter 2011 ![]() Ah well, April will soon be here, longer days and hopefully warmer & much brighter days. Graham |

The end of Feb could be interesting WRT colder weather. Note the word "could" *)) |

![]() The end of Feb could be interesting WRT colder weather. Note the word "could" *)) So the derided "hopecasters" of recent threads might end up being correct?! At least for that part of their ruminations. As ever we'll have to wait and see but what if this cold should happen to pan out? As long as this block develops, then if it is in the "right" place then it will to some degree or other. Longevity and severity are other questions, and if they can be criticized it may be for being overly bullish beyond outlining a return to blocking late winter. I have my own thoughts on that. It is of course possible they might just have got lucky, but then so would have I (and a few others I expect), but we'd have "got lucky" through strangely similar thought processes. At that range it's a question of identifying possible trends and talking in terms of probabilities. It's an aspect of forecasting that is of growing importance commercially (so, actually, I'm surprised in a way that the company in question publicly issues their thoughts). Obviously I have got no reason to support this competitor but there is probably a reason why they (and we and others) have customers in the energy markets for seasonal and sub-seasonal estimations. Traders are not stupid or gullible people, not by a long chalk. On the other hand there are "long range forecasters" who indeed are nothing more than hopecasters or guessers. It's important to distinguish. Stephen. |
