Default Met Office Charges for Data

After receiving this email, I just had to share it with you all.

Hello Shaun,

Thank you for your email and your interest in climate change.

There is as you have noted a lot of raw data on our website under the
following link http://www.metoffice.com/climate/uk/

However, any data not shown here will still be archived and to extract will
be chargeable. The minimum administration cost for extracting data will be
£250 + VAT, data is charged per element on top of this. The Met Office
often uses one station per region to be representative of the area. For
several standard products, the UK is broken down into 18 areas. To give you
an indication of the price for this, I have prepared a quotation for minumum
monthly values for June, July and August 1995 and 2003 for 18 regions. The
price for this data would be £320 + VAT.

An alternative to you would be to email our centre for climatic change at
who may be able to supply you with information about
the periods you are particularly interested in.

I hope that this information will help you, but if you have any queries or
questions, please do not hesitate to contact me on 01392 885041.

Kind regards,
Helen

How can they justify charging £320 + VAT for three months worth of
temperature data? I have to say, I was stunned. They deserve a bloody ICE
AGE for that!!

I don't know how the UK Met Office calculates its charges, but, by way
of comparison, in our part of the world, I've just sent out 90 years
of daily rainfall data for two stations to a client at a cost of A$28
(about 12 pounds at current exchange rates).

Shaun,

It beggers belief why people still use the Met Office for anything?
gradually the tide is changing and my clients are starting to see other
companies such as Noble Denton, WSI, Oceanroutes, Metcheck and BWS to name a
few.

Try www.weatheronline.co.uk to find the information, if you still have
problems let me know and I'll see what I can drum up for you.

I believe this is a hangover from the Thatcher years not yet
rescinded. I doubt it will be, too, neither. It is unlikely that the
staff are happy with the staus quo but what are they supposed to do
about it?

If you want it changed write to your MP. I think they might be
interested in any new ideas at the moment especially if its
ammunition. Of course if your MP is a Con I doubt he's going to be
willing to use it.

You will probably get a letter back saying it is free to students and
etc so there is nothing they can do; MP's being that sort of "person."

They do supply other countries' Met Offices who do put the info out.
Also the magazine "Weather" is likely to be archived in a university
near you, especially if they have a weather course. That mag contains
a lot of gen. you might use.

Perhaps if Tony can convince us to join the US and ask for statehood
then all our troubles will be over; for the yanks are excellent
providors of information to the public. Second to none.

Well, if you ask me, they are not doing this country any good at all.

Andrew, I too don't think it is right that the Met. Office should charge
exorbitant sums of money for basic data, but people go to the MetO because they
know that professional meteorologists work there. Pros work in other companies
too, but would you go to Metcheck if you saw the person in charge swearing and
acting very childishly in a public forum and who also uses model output
inappropriately, clearly demonstrating a distinct lack of understanding of the
science of NWP ?

But this pays your wages Will, I fully understand these are your personal
views but how can you advocate the UK Met Office taking advantage of it's
customers? I'll contact Steve N tomorrow afternoon to find out what he feels
regarding this situation and respond here.
