Really, really saddened to hear this. While first and foremost a tragic loss
to his family he is now a very great loss to this newsgroup and I will
remember him as a true gentleman of the group with time for everyone.

Like Mike Tullett before him, a very sad loss, but their memories live on.

This is all so sad, if not unexpected as he has not been well recently.

Paul and I go back a long way. I remember in the late 90s and early 2000s
the phone calls wehad, discussing teh five day outlooks. He was a great snow
enthusiast and loved his sledging. A damn good long range forecaster as
well, one of the very best. He had his own statistical methods and would
rarely go out on a limb. Whenever I got depressed with a mild outlook, he
used to say "chin up Will" it ain't that bad.

rememebr teh WMO snowman thread, paul was brilliant with that and in those
days we always got a good repartee going.

Rememeber the forecasting competition he and I had, he always used to do
better than me and then there was the offer of pints in the local etc etc.

oh dear tears are welling up, must stop. rest in peace my friend.

Will

close and my condolences to you too, Will.

This is very sad news. I remember Paul's contributions here very well,
and indeed, as others have commented - the Bartlett high holds its
place in Meteorological history. Rest in peace Paul.

Paul was not only a great forecaster, but a real gentleman of varied
interests especially wildlife. Many a communication passed between us on
Great Crested Newts which he had in his pond and in which we both had a
special interest. Rest in peace Paul.

Really sad news.

Always liked to hear Paul's thoughts, always interested in his forecasts
along with Will's forecasts, especially in Winter.

Very sad news, indeed. I never met Paul and knew of him only through u.s.w.
Like several of us here, he originated in the "pencil and rubber" generation of
weather forecasting and later in his career was able to expoit the developing
technology. He was clearly an enthusiast for his craft. The "Bartlett High" is
a fitting memory.

Maybe we can have a whip-round to reserve the third "P" in the DWD
high namings for this year in memoriam !

I would be interested in contributing - Whenever I asked for Paul for
advice on matters meteorological he was always obliging, taking time
to answer in detail. A true gentleman.
