I keep looking for glimmers of hope in the models but there is none.
Looks like the coming week is going to be stuck with this low over us
leading to showers and possible afternoon storms. Yesterday showed a
ridge, but this morning it's more of a cyclonic circulation. I just
haven't been able to plan a clear week ahead since March.

I think I need to go to Spain if I want any sunshine this year as this
summer is dire, better start walking now then !

I fear this could be a year without a summer. Yes go abroad, I enjoyed my
week in bavaria recently, we had 32C heat, a day of dartmoor-like rain, an
ace continental thunderstorm, snow walking and a lot of sunshine and
temperatures high teens/low 20s, all in a week!
An oh, plenty of BEER :-)

I'm glad I've got a week planned in the Austrian Alps in august - mind you
that may guarantee a week's good weather in the UK while I'm away!

Well at least we've got an excellent brand new airport right on our
doorstop to help get there! Earlier in the year I was being picked up
right outside just 20 mins after the plane landed.

Yes, the flights are really cheap. I love watching those EasyJet
flights going up from my back garden, the sad things is I then look on
he

And dream of being on it ;-)

Saying that, we are taking advantage of it with a few days in Jersey
later this month and a mid week to mid week break flying to Alicante
in Spain.

We watched my Sons flight come in at 23:10 one evening from the back
garden and he walked through the front door at 23:35. Absolutely
wonderful not having to contend with the M25.

I predict that Sunday 22nd July will be truly awful.

My reasoning is that this is when Spice London have scheduled their
Godalming walk. They have scheduled this walk four times so far this
year. The first time, back in February, cancelled due to snow. Second
time, first Sunday in March, driving rain and sleet all day, half the
people didn't turn up, one person got into difficulties, utter chaos.
Third time, Jubilee Sunday, we can all remember what the weather was
like then, was cancelled on the basis of the forecasts (although the
weather wasn't as bad here as predicted in the end). The 22nd July is
the rescheduled date. Thankfully I am playing bridge on that date so
will be indoors.

I am aware that this reply is not completely relevant to the matter under discussion. But there is a tenuous link so here goes. First, I "got into" Weather Banter because my anemometer needs repairing and I'm finding the job difficult; joined hoping someone can help and that's all in order and going nicely. Hopefully the Munro MK4 will soon be back in action. But why am I here on this thread? ....

I see that there seems to some focus on East Anglian weather. I'm a meteorologist livving in Lowestoft. Also, know a person called David Cornwell. I saw David a short while ago in Southwold but didn't have a chance to chat. Seeing nearly the same name as the author of this thread, I wonder if the David Cornwell I see at yearly reunions down at the Old Cheshire Cheese is the same person as the Weather Banter person in charge of this thread. If so, please make contact, I'd be pleased to be able to have a chat before next Christmas. If not, do you know how to get the top bearing out of my Munro MK4A anemometer so I can get the thing working again?

All the best,

Brian Littlewood

I predict that the first week of August will be flat calm and
pouring wet.

This is because I have re-booked a trip to the Bass Rock,
already cancelled twice because it was too rough to land. I can
shrug my shoulders and re-book if it's too rough again, but if
it's calm enough to land and pouring wet I'll have to go through
with it but won't achieve the purpose of the trip, i.e.
photographing Gannets. Worst of all worlds :-(

[OT] Never mind, got one or two tolerable pics of them on
Thursday at Troup Head where it was warm and mainly bright if
not actually sunny. http://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NJ8267

Lets keep this in perspective, shall we?

Less of the hysterical media-style over exaggeration?

1816 and Mount Tambora created slightly worse conditions than anything
experienced in Devon recently:-

Freak snows, crop failure and bizarre heatwaves coupled with falling
ash caused riots, fatalities and famine. The West of England and
Ireland experienced heavy rainfall throughout the summer, recording
rain on 142 days out of 153. The average temperature in London was
just over 13 degrees C. The city was subject to rioting by people who
could not afford the food being sold at inflated prices. Ships
arrived in June with stories of sea-ice near the Faroes. The Lake
District had snow in July and in September, London's lakes froze.
