Default Air Frost

Hi All

On the weather forecast at 7pm, the MO are saying that central england may
get an air frost with temps down to 0c tomorrow night.

If this happen would it be the earliest air frost for the midlands?

One that sticks in the memory was the night of 15th/16th September 1975
when the temperature dropped to -2.6șC at Stone (Staffs) and
Stratford (Warwks). I rode a motor-bike at the time, and my talents
were nearly lost to the world when the visor of my crash helmet suddenly
froze over when I was travelling through a marked dip in the road on the
outskirts of Sutton Coldfield (Don't ask). Even lower was -3.0șC
recorded at Wiseton (Notts) on the mornings of both the 16th and 17th
September 1986. The Septembers of 1986 and 1979 produced
three or four air frosts quite widely in the Midlands.

A cursory trawl through the records threw up -0.6șC
at Wellington and Wistanstow (both Salop) and Bromyard
(Herefs) on 8th September 1931 as a possible candidate
for the earliest widespread air frost in the region. (A few
frost hollow sites, of course, have registered air frost in
every month of the year).

Default Air Frost (PE)

Hi Philip, last sentance, I assume that an air frost has been recorded
'somewhere' in the UK in every month of the year (not the same 'hollow
sites' reporting air frosts every month of the year) ? Is there
anywhere in the UK that has recorded a 'frost' in every month of
the year ?

cheers jrm

My ongoing trawl through Cheltenham archives has 21st Sept (1893) as the
earliest date so far (between 1878 & 1904).
