The good news is that our favourite footpath still exists - mostly.
The path to the landward of the fish factory is flooded and is presently a small stream through which we paddled. To the seaward side, the path is destroyed and littered with slabs of rock. One piece is about 3 metres by 2 ... the power of the sea. The area where the vehicles were working has been sprayed with concrete to stablilise it - it is a mess and might have been better left. The main path is strewn with rocks. Again, some are much larger than one would think likely. At the far end, a significant chunk of path has collapsed about 3 metres into the sea and it is not possible to go beyond that. The edges of the path are a bit precarious in places. So, all in all, not as bad as I had expected. The harbour remains as reported earlier and the entire area is closed off with barriers - we went through anyway. No doubt work will begin after Hogmanay. A warm and reasonably calm day, so nice for a walk even though it is pouring with rain. We did the sensible thing and got wet! The sea is still very rough but is where it belongs rather than on land. -- Gianna Peterhead, Scotland buchan-meteo.org.uk |

So a rock that "weighs" 2.5 tonnes in air, will only be 1.5 tonnes in water. Water is also incompressable and more viscious than air so can impart more force onto objects. I often heard the rocks clonking along the bottom of the rivers here when they are in spate. Rocks 1 to 2' across. Still sounds like a fair bit of infrastructure damage. Stonehaven caught it last night with flooding on a par with Braunton. -- Cheers Dave. Nr Garrigill, Cumbria. 421m ASL. |

Have seen Cross Fell briefly, still mostly covered in snow. Very warm over night, max 8.6C now back below 5C where it has been since about midday on the 23rd November. Bit breezy, F8 for an hour between about 0200 and 0300 only F4 to F5 W'ly now. -- Cheers Dave. Nr Garrigill, Cumbria. 421m ASL. |
