uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

.... (11/0715Z): light, small flakes of snow - VIS ~4km - now covering
most roof surfaces and patchy covering on paths, but roads clear and
running well. At 06Z (first light), even less impact with just a few
patches on roofs, all blacktop surfaces clear. Even struggling to settle
on grass. No impact on daily life if this is the worst it gets.
OAT = -0.2°C.

Martin.

.... (11/0800Z): steady/slight - but recently could just about justify
something a little more intense? VIS now come down noticeably - circa
1500M, with a 'misty' element. More surfaces picking up a shallow cover
- but roads/paving etc., all fine/clear.
OAT = -0.4°C

.... (11/0915Z): steady, light snow - but I can now see the As tr above
St fra so I suspect it's on the way out. VIS back up to ~4 km; shallow,
non-continuous cover on roofs, sheds and similar: all blacktop surfaces
wet with only a light/patchy cover at the edges of sheltered pathways.
Quite difficult to assess (for 09Z reading) whether we've got a genuine
more-than-halfcover of snow - I'd assess as 60% given our suburban
character, so only just. Depth just about 1 cm on shed roof and screen,
otherwise 0.5 cm and much of it just about 0.1 cm.

OAT = -0.6°C // DP -2.8°C.

.... (11/1155Z): still light PPN, small flakes of snow, wandering lazily
down out of thin As (sun's position clearly seen); low-level air clearly
drying out as the previous St fra has dispersed as far as I can see. No
impact from PPN, VIS good now, at least 12 km, and earlier snow cover,
such as it was, has largely melted off from residual/stored heat.

OAT = +1.1°C // DP = -3.9°C.

Martin.

.... (11/1505Z): the odd flake now but I judge more to do with the Cu
drifting downwind rather than the Cm shield: have been a couple of
spells of persistent -SN in past 3 hours, but certainly no impact on
VIS/SFC & the 'older' snow is now virtually confined to some patches on
grass. I think we've always been on the edge of the thicker cloud, and
in past hour as it's drawn away, the sun has shone through the Cs neb/As
tr strongly enough to cast weak shadows - some FEW/SCT Cu med now.

OAT = +1.2°C // DP = -5.7°C.

.... (11/1810Z): dry/well-lifted cloud base: air continuing to dry out -
perky/parky wind(!) - snow virtually gone through combination heating
from below & reducing relative humidity.

OAT = +0.3°C // DP = -8.1°C.

I see there is one dew point of -11 upwind of us at 17Z.

Martin.
