Could anyone direct me to suitable places to find daily rainfall figures for September 1980 for a station in (north)(west) London ?
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/media/pdf/t/3/Sep1980.pdf tells me that "during evening of 20th, band of heavy rain and thunderstorms moved northwestwards from west sussex across south midlands and Wales" and http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/climate/...rackstorm.html says 20th September 1980 tops the list of the 5 wettest days in Bracknell with 70.8mm but I don't know if the storms hit London. I ask as I am interested in the modelling behind the overflowing of my local sewage works into the Thames and the "typical" rain year used includes September 1980 : https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/reque...ncoming-451813 Version AB of the response mentions that the list of storm discharges has been updated to include storms in September 1980 and then doesn't actually list any in that month ! |

The rainfall on 20 September 1980 is our all-time highest 24 hr (09-09)
total on record here in Wokingham. We had 71.6mm. I do have a list of the falls on that day for other stations in this area, with Yateley Manor School being the highest with 84.3 mm. Other values over 70 mm were 72.6 mm at Reading Road, 71.8 mm at Sonning Farm, 70.8 mm at Beaufort Park. There was quite a sharp cut off to the east and west, with Slough Ragstone Road having 24.8 mm and Inkpen having 27.4 mm. -- Bernard Burton Wokingham Berkshire. The rainfall in my area of East London (8 miles east of the City) on that date, as measured by staff at City of London Cemetary (E12 5DQ), shows there was 0.2mm on 20th. And 8.1mm recorded the following day. Nothing out of the ordinary |

![]() In the the 24 hours up to 2100 on Sunday 21st September 1980, the rainfall was 54.9 mm at Fleet Hampshire. Rain arrived around 2000 on Saturday 20th and become 'very heavy with thunderstorm between 2200 and 2300'. Rain followed for the first part of the night. Approximately 55.0 mm fell at Guildford, Surrey in the 24 hours up to 0900 21st. Worthing recorded 94.5 mm, with apparent little flooding whereas nearby Brighton only received 8.5 mm which demonstrates the sudden cut off from the rain area. There is an article in the WEATHER magazine from sometime in 1981 or 1982 which does a case study on the above event and also 14th April 1981 (Horsham deluge) and 2nd June 1981 (Worthing deluge). |

The Hampstead weather station had its wettest day of the month on the 16th, with 10.7mm of rain. So if there was rain there on the 20th, it can't have been that much. http://www.weather-uk.com/hampstead/years/Y1980.html -- John Hall "He crams with cans of poisoned meat The subjects of the King, And when they die by thousands G.K.Chesterton: Why, he laughs like anything." from "Song Against Grocers" |
