Had a single, but loud, roll of thunder at 1546, Burythorpe, 4 miles S of Malton. Nothing on the Met Office system. Any comments on the efficacy of ADTNET system?

This independent network only shows sferics in the frontal precipitation over Scotland over the past couple of hours. http://www.blitzortung.org/Webpages/...n&subpage_0=12 -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. David, The sound came from the west, estimate more Castle Howard. It was definitely thunder! Rapid development as the front passed over, the rain radar jumped a class to 8-16 mm h-1 in 15 mins, lots of icy precip in the minutes after the noise. Sitting in a conservatory, no other noises near, except wind in the trees and the later rain on the roof. Only other time I ever noticed the 'missing' lightning was the most powerful solitary bolt I'd ever experienced. One single discharge in the centre of Bristol. A friend working in a geography lab in the University, pretty high up a hill, had risers coming taps before the strike. My office phone stopped working (about 20 m from where the risers were) and a lot of the University comms/network kit also. Later, no sign of any lightning on the Met Office monthly summary (this was 2005 or so). Should have probed it more, wondered if it was positive lightning. I don't think it was in this case, as the UKMO review of the ADTNET talks about it missing cloud-to-cloud strokes, so it must have been one of these (was really wondering if there are any people with ADTNET calibration experience around on this board). Not my Burythorpe station (we're renting for a few months), but if you've a link I'd be very glad to have it. Was told it existed, but searching for Burythorpe and weather brings up hundreds of generated links. Was over in Kilham the other week- lunch at The Star- excellent. Cheers, David. |

The weather station at Burythorpe produces occasional reports on the Weather Underground site, (http://www.wunderground.com/wundermap/)but there's a few others on the Wolds as well. To be honest I wasn't paying that much attention to the weather then as we were in the middle of a 5 hour mysterious power cut. Maybe there was a lightning strike somewhere! I have a Davis system not linked to any website, but it might be possible to find my oregon scientific station on their site. |
