It is very difficult to work out where it is cold and where there is
snow cover. The Media aren't helping. It's not a North vs London bias it's a we'll report the worst case as being everywhere bias. On News 24 I just got in the handover to the forecaster " Can it possibly get any colder than this?" Answer, "Not really after the near record breaking temperatures in some parts last night". Am I imagining this stuff or are they? I am prepared to concede that today is the first day of a cold snap here as the max looks like being 3.6C today and there was a slight frost last night. BUT where exactly is all of the snow cover and freezing weather they keep mentioning? Dave, S.Essex |

BUT where exactly is all of the snow cover and freezing
weather they keep mentioning? Dave, S.Essex Well, it is frosty here - just. There's ice on puddles showing no sign of melting, and the car thermometer was showing 0.0șC. The sky is cloudless and there was even some warmth in the sun, and all the hills of Sutherland and Caithness are covered in snow. Beautiful. Wish I could have stayed out all day ![]() Anne |

The snow line is now about 100' above me and the hills to the south are thickly clad. West of here, including the Glasgow area, has snow cover as well. Here you go, 1020-1205 today http://lance-modis.eosdis.nasa.gov/i...5019.terra.1km although there's a lot of cloud over N England and Midlands -- George in Swanston, Edinburgh, 575'asl www.swanstonweather.co.uk www.eppingweather.co.uk www.winter1947.co.uk |

Thanks George. But to answer Dave's question, clearly northern Britain and many parts of Wales are cold. Just beginning in the SE and in the SW it began yesterday, bearing in mind that upland areas of England like the Cotswolds, Peak District and SW moors can get snow in January even in milder spells. A good indicator of cold weather in my locality is not snow but persistence of ice. Yesterday was the first day that ice persisted all day (even in sunshine). Proper cold is when we start to get rime icing and that has not happened yet this winter. BUT where exactly is all of the snow cover and freezing weather they keep mentioning? Dave, S.Essex I was rather amused this morning listening to Mishal Hussain doing a telephone interview with a B&B owner at Altnaharra. The thrust of the interview was along the lines of "How do you manage to cope with the temperature as low as -7" The implication was that this was cold beyond what could reasonably be expected. Sad really :-( Goodness knows what the media would come up with if we got a proper cold spell. Despite having had a fair bit of snow here this month the mean temperature for the month to date is still 2 deg above the January average. The next few days will undoubtedly bring it back closer to the average but it's by no means been a cold month so far -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. http://peakdistrictweather.org |

BUT where exactly is all of the snow cover and freezing weather they keep mentioning? Dave, S.Essex It was all shown clearly on the weather forecast map last night (BBC TV). As for 'can it get any colder?' The answer is yes, quite easily and it would be surprising if it didn't. Zero degrees in my area today but very light wind so feels warm enough. -- AS http://min.opcop.org.uk the minnies and more |

On News 24 I just got in the handover to the forecaster " Can it possibly get any colder than this?" Yes I saw that. Quite brilliant. Also talking about the record not being likely to go for the coldest ever. Jesus. The whole thing's been blown out of proportion. It's January. It snows. Much as I'd like it to snow down here , thank heavens it hasn't for the amount of media nonsense we'd get with reporters "posted" everywhere awaiting the next snowflake with baited frosty breath.
