"Eskimo Will" wrote in message ... 0730 A few snow showers overnight have left a covering over the grass. Temperature has stayed around +1.8C all night meaning roads are wet and clear. Veil of medium frontal cloud passing to my south with a few showers to the north. Wet-bulb freezing levels have risen to circa 550m asl due to the frontal plume but set to fall again later today. Postbridge is up to +2.7C now in the warm plume but webcam is showing a snow cover. 0800 Sleet falling from medium cloud. T+2.2C. Peak of mild air will be next couple of hours. 0900 Still sleeting, T+2.2C and steady. Just been a drive around and it is snowing at 400 metres but not settling on the road which is wet. Extensive thin cover of snow which looks to be more substantial above 450 metres. Went down to the shops at Bovey Tracey which is just 30 metres above sea level and it was cold rain with temperature +4C. Seemed wrong being there with ice on the car roof! 1115 Sleet showers have continued this morning despite higher dewpoints (circa 3C). Practically all rain at one stage. Now more snow in the mainly light showers as the colder air in depth starts to dig back in. Fascinating weather! 1150 Crazy weather! Showers have stopped and temperature has rocketed up to +5.5C which is warmer than this time yesterday. Yet ..... in 6 hours time wet-bulb freezing level is forecast to be 250m asl (i.e. below my house) and snowing. The line moving south down the Irish Sea (same line that has given Norman and Manchester a dumping on the pivot) is taking on cold front characteristics, so I guess it will be that set to cause the decrease. Pressure continues to fall relentlessly at 986 hPa. Ah sun is out time to put on my shades and have a coffee on the terrace in the balmy conditions. Needless to say, remaining lying snow melted rapidly in the past hour in the Haytor area. 1225 The drama continues - no sooner that I went outside when it started to rain. This quickly turned to small hail and then a few minutes later snow, medium sized flakes. Snow falling into a cup of coffee doesn't half cool it quickly :-) Now sun is coming out once again but the skyscape is completely different to this morning. The medium cloud has gone and there are low winter Cb tops visible. Temperature is falling quickly and is back down to +3.8C after a max. of 6.0C just 15 minutes ago! This is why I love Dartmoor weather so much, we actually get weather, sometimes four seasons in one day. What next? Bring it on :-) 1420 Moderate to heavy snow. Vis. less than 500 metres. Really coming down hard and blowing blizzard-like in the strengthening wind. Accumulating quickly and rapidly turning Haytor white. T +2.5C and falling quickly 1615 Heavy hail depositing 1cm followed by heavy horizontal snow. Main road is covered in snow 1 hour after gritter went through. Temp +0.3C. Now clearing up with large areas of blue sky. That's it now for a wee while! 2130 Light snow showers have continued this evening. 1cm full cover, road slushy. Although temperatures are still over 1 degree above freezing the top of the snow has frozen. Going to be interesting tonight when that polar low comes down. It has a history of thunder and very heavy precip. Above 300 metres in SW England thundersnow is a possibility. It seems to be tracking further west than the models suggested at midday. Shades of Feb 2009 when the WBZ was over 600 metres asl initially and yet we still got 9 inches of snow in 4 hours. Convection is a powerful force for bringing freezing levels right down. Having said that there is a lot of rain being reported at low level stations in Northern Ireland. Arrived back to Blackheath just now to snow falling. I'm easily pleased in my middle age as I'll happily take that for the winter. Interesting that "the swirl" is only really producing rain....at the moment. Richard |
