Here is another, better, longer YouTube from Prof. Wadhams:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-qdbICw2f8

He is briefing a prestigous group of Italian scientists. He explains, among
other things, how the loss of the Arctic sea ice is causing the Greenland
Ice Sheet to melt.

Cheers, Alastair.

I'll be flying over Greenland in a few hours, en-route from Vancouver to London. I'll look out the window and report back.

Do you do know what to look for? Melt ponds like these forming in ice from
the North Pole:

Only the Greenland ponds are much larger.

Cheers, Alastair.

Thank you Bruce. No sign yet of Arctic ice melt accelerating in 2015.

Well, my remark was a bit tongue in cheek and unfortunately, when we passed over Greenland the cabin was in night mode, and raising the window blinds resulted in loud tutting from other passengers trying to sleep. I'm afraid my important research was not possible!

Incidently Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia is suffering from a severe drought. The result is many forest fires with thick smoke affecting large areas.

The following link has some dramatic photos and other information on the effect of a wildfire in Port Alberni which is in the centre of Vancouver Island.

That is an excellent and informative website with some interesting
links. Some great work establishing a network of weather stations in
schools in that area for example. I have also learned that the 'Mars'
referred to in the text is in fact the Martin Mars a 70 year old flying
boat converted to a water bomber. Apparently pulled out of retirement to
fight these current forest fires on Victoria Island. Planned as a bomber
in WW2, actually used for transport, and finally forming a small fleet
of water bombers.
Anyway for anyone who likes aeroplanes here it is
http://www.alberniweather.ca/webcams/ but not actually flying just
running up, as they say.

No need for Steve to make his trip now :-)

That is very interesting. The melt ponds are smaller than I expected
assuming that they are the black dots next to the grey area. Is that
view updated daily on a public site? I would quite like to follow
the melt over the sumer.

Cheers, Alastair.

Does this wave after wave of tax funded woe ever stop. The green land ice mass balance has been well above the mean all year until just recently where the balance is being adjusted
