Default Satellite imagery of Europe, 16th July, 14:45 BST

I find this interesting: Right on the border between France and Spain there
is a line of cloud growing rapidly. The same is happening in other areas in
Spain, and in the middle of Italy, in particular. What would be causing
that? Is it elevated land where the air is rising and clouds are therefore
forming? It's quite striking, even more so if you look at it more closely.

Cbs developing over high ground, you can see the cirrus shearing off aloft.

Yes it's quite striking - I suppose if you were on the ground you would see
'anvil clouds' with the tops spreading out / 'shearing off' as you say.
Potential for a spot of moisture in the air?...

Plenty of lightning kicking off where these are forming, too. Looks like
the wind is a bit too much from the west for us to get much here in the UK,
except perhaps in the south-east corner. Could be wrong though, time will
tell...
