Default Any experts on Leeds weather?

I need some advice from local weather experts in Leeds area please? I would
like to know whether Leeds gets affected by lee gustiness in a strong SW
airflow so I can advise my daughter who lives in NE Leeds. Looking at the
charts it is looking quite serious for northern England on Saturday with a
stable flow and geostrophic winds in excess of 80 knots. I know Ken (and
Sheffield) has problems in a westerly, but SW'ly to the east of the
Pennines?

Will, I think you'll find that Leeds is affected by funnelling of wind from Wharfedale, but this would be from a NW direction, not a SW one and not likely to affect NE Leeds, I would have thought.
In terms of Lee wave, I think it unlikely from the local topography and a SW perspective, a Westerly might be a different proposition. I think the lee waves tend to affect areas slightly to the East of Leeds as well, so would depend on exact location.

Don't quote me on that, I'm hardly an expert and probably talking rubbish. But I'm keen!

Thanks David. They were my initial thoughts as well. So confirmation.

Lots of uncertainty on the depth and whereabouts of the low but the gradient is there in most of the models:

Ferrybridge power station is not too far from Leeds-but to the SE. I remember the cooling towers being blown down in 1965 by a steady SW gale-it's on film somewhere.
IIRC, lee waves were blamed at the time.

Hi, Will,
WSW is the direction for us in a lee wave. The Cross Fell /Dun Fell ridge takes the blame I think. Leeds is a windy city and I think the Pennine Lee Wave causes problems there as well.
Certainly the airport is notorious for crosswinds and there are several youtube videos of that.
WSW gale here again last night, 02:20Z WSW 34G44KT.

Ah yes, thanks, I actually remember hearing about that on the news. I was 13
at the time.

Thanks Ken. Been up there in a westerly with powerful gusts. Better alert my
daughter I think, especially as there is now a yellow warning out.

There's quite a detailed analysis of the Ferrybridge event by Shellard in the
June 1967 issue of "Weather", available on-line to members of the Royal Met Soc.

My daughter and her b/f are due to fly into Leeds tonight after spending three months circumnavigating. We are hoping that after this she will settle down and give us a couple of grandsprogs.
In view of this thread, I shall take extra interest in her landing-and NOT leave this page open for my wife to see!
