Colin Youngs writes Glenanne and Redesdale 18 mm, Carlisle 19 mm, Aberdaron 21 mm, Sennybridge 22 mm, Eskdalemuir 24 mm, Mona (Anglesey) 25 mm, West Freugh and Capel Curig 26 mm, Keswick and St Bees Head 27 mm, Dundrennan, Shap and Valley 28 mm, Ronaldsway (IOM) 48 mm. Colin Youngs Brussels Ronaldsway recorded 48 mms, I live up in the northern Manx hills (Ronaldsway is 25 miles away on the SE coast ), I recorded 94 mm on Thursday 3rd December. The back of our house is no more than 10 feet away, and 10 feet above, the island's biggest river, the Sulby. Thursday was the highest I've seen it in 25 years of living here. It literally came within a whisker, a couple of inches, of flooding the house, which has never happened before. Between 13.00 and 17.00 my Davis Vantage Vue showed rainfall of 78mm. I'm not sure just how accurate my rain gauge is but know it didn't half throw it down. Never seen rain so heavy go on for so long before and at 64 I'm pretty old. Don't, will not, get into the climate change debate here I don't know what to think. What I can say for sure is that over the last 8 years I've been keeping records mean temps have risen slightly and rainfall has increased markedly. I know 8 years isn't much and is certainly not enough to make a decision on climate change, before somebody points it out. Cheers -- Jim |

Most I have ever recorded in one day in 13 years is 71mm but then we are on the dry side of Dartmoor. Postbridge has had 156mm in one day. I guess you are also quite exposed? I suspect the Manx climatology is revealing itself to you in all her guises. Will I'll say it was, imagine a thunderstorm but instead of lasting 20 minutes or so, this went on for literally hours, personally I'd never experienced rain like it in the British Isles. The most I've ever recorded in a day before was similar to yours around 75 mm. That's why I wondered just how accurate my rain gauge was. However the physical effects were plain to see, never seen the river so high and local flooding so bad before. Apart from when you're wondering if the kitchen is about to disappear under dirty river water, weather remains fascinating. -- Jim |
