I've noticed that Philip Edens byline has been missing from the Sunday
Torygraph for the last couple of weeks, and has been replaced by a couple
of unknowns, giving the usual inconsequential ( what a lovely week I've had)'
Is this trying to keep up with the Beebs relentless dumbing down of
the daily forecasts or sidelining Philip because he's too technical for
todays yoof ? It could be money of course .....

I send my monthly stats to Philip and he's always very quick to send a
'thank you'. This month, I haven't received it.

The Telegraph seems to be constantly dumbing down. I've given up on it.

Maybe one shouldn't be too quick to come down hard on the ST.
It's my feeling that PE has been slowly divorcing himself from the public side of weather journalism for some years. Once he used to happily take part in sites like these. That stopped. Then his own website was no longer updated.
Maybe the end of his ST column is part of the process. Much as I regret the touchy-feely nonsense of today's columnist and the loss of his wisdom and stats, maybe its his conscious decision.

Does that make Philip Eden a 'whither' forecaster ?

Philip Eden may not be too well. He has had an increasing problem with deafness for some time and maybe things have just got too much for him.

Poor old Philip, hope it isn't serious enough to lead to total loss of hearing.

I've also noticed and regretted that.

I'm guessing that it's neither, and that he's trying to cut down on his
commitments. The last time I checked up on his websites some six months
or more ago, he seemed to have pretty much stopped updating them, and a
few months ago he ceased looking after the Weather Log feature in the
monthly "Weather" magazine. I hope it's just that he fancies a life of
leisure, or maybe has some big project underway that is taking a lot of
his time, and not that he's having health problems.

I received an email from Philip some time ago during one of my exchanges regarding advice on the weather. He was well then but was recovering from illness. Perhaps the bean counters have targeted his column now? The DT seem to have sacked many of their journalists and, if a report that I read a few weeks ago is anything to go by, are using straight out uni graduates to write up 'reports' on weather-related issues.
He is still at the observatory in Dunstable and is amenable to visits to the library there. Try emailing him
