No air frost here, either, though the min Friday morning was 0.0°C and the max's Thursday and Friday were 4.0 and 4.8. This area usually does well in a NW'ly and today (Friday) has been almost entirely cloudless.
I wouldn't call it a cold spell. For that there would have to be a few max's below 0°C here and there haven't been any and I see no prospect of any. There may be some cold nights but I think there'll be too much cloud.

I always thought the definition of cold was 3-4 deg C below normal? So for
you Tudor maxes of 3-4C would be cold. Sub zero max. would be very cold. My
max. yesterday was 5C (technically only rather cold) but it was snowing with
snow on the ground, so was that cold? All a bit subjective really.

No air frost last night, despite clear skies and a light offshore wind.

Yesterday's max was 8.4C, the coldest of the winter so far. I suspect it will be slightly higher today and fall little tonight, so this marks the 'cold point' of the spell.

OK I'm in Penzance but since 1992 I have recorded 523 lower maximums (maxima?) To put it another way over the last 24 years 1 day in 27 has been colder!
January 1997 saw 6 days fail to reach 2C.

It's Latin Nick. Since "um" is the ending of a neuter latin word, and
"ia" its plural. But if we are going to do that, we probably need to
take into account the other latin cases. So we might talk about
"Stadiorum seating" for example. Or we should use latin plurals for
other latin derived words so the plural of "bus" should be "bi". It's
simpler to stick with the English I think.

There are a number of English words where the plural is that of the original language, usually Latin or Greek, e.g phenomena, perihelia, radii. I have always taken maxima and minima to be members of that class and if that makes me a snob, well, so be it; we need more of them.
The unit of measurement is a stadium and stadia is simply the plural. Like Kornfläken.

"Bus" comes from "omnibus" (Latin dative case) meaning "for all". In Latin, the word already is plural (adjectival noun).

Same here in N. Bristol. Took a risk and left pelargoniums,etc, uncovered.
A couple of hours at -0.2C did them no harm on Friday night. Who knows? This w/e might be our winter.
