After resisting for a couple of days the house has now cooled to winter
temperatures. With it being 11.8C outside, dark and much colder than December I have allowed the radiator to come on in the living room to get it up to a more comfortable 19C. ........ cue Will ;-) Dave |

The outside temperature reached the dizzy heights of 11.6C an hour ago but it's dropped back to 10.8C now. Our lowest June 09-09z max is 10.2C which occurred in 2009 and again in 2012 so today is nowhere near challenging that. Nevertheless, it's a far cry from 'flaming June'. -- Norman Lynagh Tideswell, Derbyshire 303m a.s.l. http://peakdistrictweather.org |

Plenty warm enough in a tee-shirt. 19C would be hot for me, it only gets over 20C with a log fire on. Outside 15.2C, so quite warm. I really hate going into warm houses they always feel so stuffy. Yes, Will, we all know you're weird but I reckon 21C is what is regarded as a comfortable temperature for normal people. Perhaps you'd be happier with the conditions as described by Thoreau in his journal on February 7 1855: "The coldest night for a long, long time. Sheets froze stiff about the face. . . . People dreaded to go to bed. . . . The latches are white with frost, and every nail-head in entries, etc., has a white head." "My pail of water was frozen in the morning so that I could not break it. . . . Bread, meat, milk, cheese, etc., all frozen." And in January the following year: "You lie with your feet or legs curled up, waiting for the morning, the sheets shining with frost about your mouth. Water left by the stove is frozen thick, and what you sprinkle in bathing falls on the floor, ice. The house plants are all frozen, and soon droop and turn black." Next winter: "Ink froze; had to break the ice in my pail with a hammer." Happy days. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. Blimey, you're not that far away and yet you've suffered over there. The Davis VP2 is currently showing a temperature of 24.2C inside (one of the rear upstairs rooms), this is pretty representative of the whole house. Shorts and vest temperature. Heating hasn't come on since April but I do live in a well insulated reasonably modern house. Only a maximum of 18.3C today. Coldest day since the 25th May. -- Nick Gardner Otter Valley, Devon 20 m amsl http://www.ottervalleyweather.me.uk |

I@d be permanently sweating in those temperatures. How on earth do you sleep at night? Not had my heating on last month either with windows wide open to let in the lovely fresh country air directly! I can sleep in any temperature my bedroom has ever reached (about 29°). Cold is far worse. We gentlemen of a certain age need to "get up in the night" once or twice and I see no virtue in throwing back the bedclothes and exposing myself (sic) to the inside of a fridge.. A reasonable temperature (say 18°) also makes getting out of bed in the morning that much easier. My bedroom is my living room anyway for much of the time. I have no problem with cold outside and probably wrap up less than most people of my age. Outside is outside but inside is the comfort zone. Tudor Hughes |
