ECMWF is bigging up zonality. Yay! Zonal Christmas - must be, oh - almost year since we had one of those.
I'm putting my money on a cold New Year. |

I did think that was on the cards from 10 days out, not 7! Good luck with the cold New Year. It will get cold at some time this winter and there will be snow for most. Happy with that forecast? |

All I want for Christmas is for someone to turn the weather machine back on.. It's just been boring recently - no jetstream to move things along, but too much maritime influence to make it anything other than a gloomfest. I don't mind a good ol' Christmas Storm, TBH.

I think the very stagnant nature of the weather in itself interesting, it makes me wonder what sort of things can happen to break it down. Is it anything to do with the unusually slow recovery of Arctic sea ice and anomalously high temperatures up there in autumn, or that we are approacing a solar minimum. |

If the Boxing Day GFS forecast turns out to be correct, someone may be turning the weather machine up to 11! I admit to having been a bit bored lately to see almost every morning that I can only see one pointer on my barometer as it hasn't changed from the day before. -- Graham P Davis, Bracknell, Berks. In message , Graham P Davis
writes If the Boxing Day GFS forecast turns out to be correct, someone may be turning the weather machine up to 11! The ECMWF operational run is far less dramatic (though it does offer at T+240 a tantalising hint that a northerly might be about to set in - I think it's very much in a minority among its ensemble in that, though). -- John Hall "One can certainly imagine the myriad of uses for a hand-held iguana maker" Hobbes (the tiger, not the philosopher!) |

You'll definitely get that, Chris and once the zonal train begins to roll, it can take some stopping, |

BBC yesterday evening put it down to very cold air over the USA and much warmer air to the South creating a strong jet which will kick in for us later this week. |
