Colin Youngs writes UK min. temps on Tuesday night https://tinyurl.com/y6czn5oy Kinbrace (Sutherland) 0.8°C, Westonbirt (Glos) and Otterbourne (Hants) 0.7°C, Aviemore and Charlwood 0.6°C, South Newington (Oxon) 0.4°C, Dalwhinnie and Usk (Monmouthshire) 0.3°C, Farnham (Alice Holt Lodge) 0.2°C, Glen Ogle -0.2°C, Shoreham -0.4°C. Jersey Airport 7.6°C, St Mary’s (Scilly) and St Helier (Jersey) 7.7°C, Portland and St Catherine’s Point 8.5°C. It's a slight surprise that Shoreham was the coldest place, assuming that it's the Sussex Shoreham (which as there's an airfield there seems likely). As the crow flies, it's probably only 60 or so miles from St Catherine’s Point, the mildest place overnight. -- John Hall "If you haven't got anything nice to say about anybody, come sit next to me." Wind seems to have fallen away overnight - no doubt that played a part in the low temperature https://tinyurl.com/shcsmzp . Colin Youngs Brussels |

John, yes the min temp pattern on Tuesday night was quite interesting in the SE. Shoreham is close to the River Adur and it can lie under the katabatic flow as it pushes through the gap in the South Downs immediately north of the airfield. The breeze must have dropped sufficiently low for the low-level flow to become detached from the flow aloft. A similar thing happened at Usk in Monmouthshire - by the river, classic frost hollow site on occasions.
Notable too that two other cold sites were Alice Holt Lodge (Farnham) and Santon Downham, Norfolk / Suffolk borders. Both are in sheltered clearings in woodland. Julian Molesey |
