uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged. |

Why does the MetO, as it has for some time, show no observations for Scilly, whilst other sites quite happily show it.
E.g. https://www.xcweather.co.uk/ The observations seem quite reasonable to me, they've certainly been more questionable at times. Fantastic weather for a swim today at 14:00. Around 22C, high humidity, the earlier F2-3 ESE wind died and became a very gentle (F1-2) WNW, as it often does during the afternoon in these type of conditions. A very local effect associated with the later warming of the north coast (at least that's my theory). A pool of warm water off the Battery Rocks recorded as 21C!! The highest this year. Quite a swell though, a bit of timing required going up and down the steps into the sea. SST 17C out at the Penzance buoy, so a rather fortuitous warm pool where the sun warmed surface water had piles up between the prom & the Jubilee pool.. Graham Penzance |

Graham Penzance Because there's no SYNOP only a METAR. And if I remember correctly, METARs are only supposed to be used for aviation purposes. If this is the case (has this changed Freddie?) then the MetO can't be seen to be breaking the rules, whereas XC Weather et al are less constrained. |

I didn't realise it had stopped reporting until I checked just now. I know there were some covid restrictions on engineering staff getting to some sites, perhaps that has been the case here, and it is waiting to be repaired. METARs are received from Scilly (EGHE) but are only used for Aviation as Metman2012 says. I don't think they are 24/7 anyway, so even if they were used it would be difficult to integrate into a 24/7 product. -- Freddie Alcaston Shropshire 148m AMSL http://www.hosiene.co.uk/weather/ Stats for the month so far: https://www.hosiene.co.uk/weather/st...cs/latest.xlsx |

As there's never been a case of COVID on Scilly, I would have thought it a particularly safe place for an engineer to go! I know there are special flights from Lands End for essential staff so they don't even have to mix with visitors. Graham Penzance |

Graham Penzance Currently Benson only has a full Synop when there's a forecaster, mainly during the day and evening, so a lot of the time there's no viz, weather or cloud reported. Indeed, it was missing altogether for a while. But I don't know why no one's going to it (or Scilly) and I didn't get a reply to my enquiry why nothing had been done to rectify this. Perhaps I should ask again , citing FOI! |
