Good morning all.

Light snow accompanied by frequent lightning (SNTS?) over Athens since a few
hours. Snowfalls are moderate in the northern suburbs and heavy at times in
the northernmost ones and the surrounding hills and mountains. Blowing snow
and freezing fog in the northernmost suburbs, too.

Pictures from Dionysos, a northern suburb:

snip Great pictures, Yannis. THE ambiance for a real Greek X-mas party
:-))! And this all due to such a cruel high bringing you snow but no chances
for some proper ice for us :-(.
I have the uncomfortable feeling that this situation will repeat over and
over again in the winter to come: while we get those jolly snow-pictures
from Athens; it'll be quiet and cloudy, maybe some drizzle over the
Netherlands; temp around 3-7 C.
Well, at least someone is happy :-)). Enjoy it!!

Great photos Yannis. It's normally referred to as "TSSN" IIRC.
You often get very vivid colours of lightning in such situations.

Very odd to see your temperature that low, when so used to it
being 35-36C over summer.

with trepidation now.....!)

Yes, I saw it in METARs from ...Crete shortly later after all:-)
Irakleion and, especially, Chania, at the northern coast, had snow lying in
the morning down to sea level.

I believe its TSSN and its only the intensity of the thunder/lightning thats
noted?

-TSSN (light thunder) or +TSSN (heavy thunder) as thunder is given priority
over snowfall (it has a higher synop code number)

someone correct me!

In METARs the ( +/-) refers to the intensity of the precipitation. However,
IIRC, SYNOP code 97 refers to the intensity of the thunder/lightning..
