Default real winter in Japan

Somewhat off topic but I couldn't resist.

These are genuine pictures from an old flying mate who now works in Japan.

Sorry guys. I have had to withdraw the link for the time being as I
mistakenly though I had permission.

I've written to John and maybe he'll give the OK when he wakes up in the
morning, Japan time.

Sorry to keep writing to myself.

All OK with the permission (John hadn't yet gone to bed).

So see Japan's winter:

Jack - nice pictures. What's it worse landing in - heavy snow with no wind
or fog?

Or are all landings pretty much automatic nowadays?

Cheers

First time you've posted here I think isn't olrac? Well if it isn't, I
certainly hadn't noticed you before.

Nice pics.
I guess it makes no difference landing in fog. The computer lines you up and
... that's it. Well almost.
With wind, thrust adjusment needs to be made(danger of stalling etc), plus
increments to heading, to keep on correct course\Glide slope\ILS.
I would imagine fog is probably the easiest type of landing, due to this
type of weather being associated with no wind whatsoever.
From a virtual pilot who has never flown a real plane in his life ;( .

Just a little background.

John had to make an effort to send me the "raw" pictures when he probably
felt more like retiring to bed. I then spent some 20 minutes or so
re-processing and putting them on a webpage (for which I do in fact pay a
nominal fee each year). I had to resize, deal with Jpeg artefacts, compress
appropriately and fit them neatly on to the page. These things don't "just
happen."

So I offer little apology for getting hot under the collar when I responded
harshly to a particular comment.

Do I get it right that what is spectacular here is that your pal was
able to take pictures from the cockpit while landing to rather
difficult conditions ?

Having snow in location of Sapporo Winter Olympics is certainly not
rare.
I was planning a (later cancelled) business trip to Sapporo and found
this friendly site giving dressing instructions:

http://www.global.city.sapporo.jp/co...seful/use.html
is says " Mid-November brings the first snow and by mid-December the
city is white over. Special soles fitted to shoes (available locally)
are necessary to help prevent slipping on the ice and snow. In January
and February when temperatures drop well below zero, hats, gloves, and
thick overcoats become a necessity. Although Sapporo experiences heavy
snowfall during this period, the snow that falls is dry and can be
brushed off clothing, eliminating the need for umbrellas in winter.
The difference in temperature between the freezing outdoors and (over)
heated shops and public transport can cause problems in winter, so
layers of clothes that can easily be taken off may be useful."

yearly snowfall is 494 cm lowest temperature -14.7C (this is a tourist
site so they haven't defined what they mean by these numbers)

And there is yearly Japan Snow Sculpture Festival...

....and after collecting all this info my trip (last February) was
cancelled.

Happy new year,
Elena
