Over to your east at Holbeach St Matthew (Wash coastline), after a fairly
bright, sunnyish morning it has now clouded over and turned very misty. No

Hi Graham,

I'm quite pleased you are up into double figures - I have been experimenting
with forecasting temperatures using the 850 Hpa charts, and forecast a
temperature of 10C for the extreme SW of England today, falling to 6C around
Bristol and 4C around Southampton.

The only other places I had forecast above 6C today we

North Wales at 7C
Northern Ireland at 9C
Southern Eire at 12C

I'm fairly happy about my accuracy thus far - I'll keep it going to see if
it continues to prove reasonably accurate.

Would be interesting to see the method if you could put it on a webpage
anywhere.

On a similar (sort of) tack, I'm planning in some spare time to look at NCEP
reanalysis data to have a look at 2m temperature vs thickness for different
wind directions: I'm hoping it might be enlightening for people who use the
528 line as a strict demarcation for rain/snow scenarios!

Cheers
Richard

You will, as I'm sure you suspect, get a massive range for non-unstable
(if you see what I mean) situations ... mid-January 1982 springs to mind
when Benson had a max temp of -10ºC with a thickness approaching
550 gpdam.

However, if you could stretch your analysis to compare mean monthly
temperature with mean monthly thickness I would be be very interested
in the results :-)
