If you get any news on when it might be up and running we'll be
interested.

Chenies is fine, but in it's *outer* range in that direction, it has
limitations. I always remember one winter in the second half of the
1980's; low thickness values, a strong northeast gradient and 'wintry
showers' coming off the North Sea. All we could see (at London) on the
radar were occasional isolated pixels over the Medway towns etc. It
wasn't until the duty engineer for the Maidstone division rang up saying
that most of the roads under his care were closed due to snow that we
realised Chenies had significant limitations in this direction. These
showers (probably genuine Cb) were not very deep (so the radar tended to
sample the smaller cloud-nuclei at altitude rather than the low-level
precipitation), but *very* vigorous, and they just kept streaming off
the sea across NE Kent. This new unit will help enormously. [And I'm
sure we *will* get that situation again ...... ;-)]
