Default Forecaster could do with just a thank you.

I was hoping for just a small thank you from a person called Jon who said
that he would like anybody in this group to give him a forecast some 8 or 9
days ahead for the Bishops Waltham area of Hampshire. Some of you probably
remember the post or may even know him and the event that he was involved
with. Some of you may have responded. My reply was as follows:-

Snip
"On a more specific note it does look as though the pressure will rise and
the Weekend of the 24th turn out quite warm, mostly dry with sunny spells
after a relatively unsettled earlier part of the week. I am hoping that this
will materialise to make my long range forecast for April just about on
track."

Normally I would not be so forward about this but this has happened on
several occasions over the past year in uk.sci weather often with an
introduction of "I have been lurking for sometime on this group----". For
instance there was a lady from Arundel, in Sussex who was planning an event
for her area and wanted information. Again you may remember the post but no
reply from her even though the forecast turned out very much as predicted
and it cost her not a cent.

The public and the media are quick to throw stones but often slow to shower
praise and appreciation.

Yes I remember it well, Ian. Sunny spells from the word go IIRC, eloquently
put I thought. Just can't get the gratitude these days, even so I'm looking
forward to my prize :-)

Yes well done, Jon - you seem to have been spot on. Pity it wasn't like
that up here yesterday. You might make a forecaster yet :-)

Perhaps Jon who asked the question has no access to a PC just now and is not
able to post a follow-up message. Maybe he was interested in a forecast
because of some event which involved him spending the weekend away from
home.

Well said, Ian. When this is so striking to you; you also may have noticed
how often this happens to Yannis? People who want to visit certain parts of
Greece, asking him about the climate & weather for a particular period.
Yannis replies are usually perfect and well-substationated. Hardly ever read
a "thank you". A matter of good manners, indeed Gavin!!

Human nature I'm afraid Ian. As a SysAdmin of many years, I have learned
that users forget the 2000 days that everything worked perfectly, and
will kick your @rse and predictably remind you (during friday lunchtime
pub visits usually) of the two days when everything went fubar'd.

Ah well... you get used to it

Time to repeat the weather forecaster's mantra:

Many critics, no defenders,
Weather men have two regrets.
When we're right no-one remembers:
When we're wrong no-one forgets.

Anon - although I have heard Bert Foord recite it.

You are still alive aren't you?

And you don't live in Russia do you?

What else do you want?

Permission not to go to Africa ever?

Or Yugoslavia or the USA or what?

LOL, and I thought I could have got away with it without replying to this
thread! Oh well, a 'thank you' is always nice to receive but it'y my
pleasure to give any information anyone might need :-)

Well, since nobody else will say it, I will.

Thank you Ian, and the others for such a good forecast. If only I had trusted
you I would have worn my new tee-shirt on Saturday, but I did leave my anorak
behind. It was a glorious day.

Please can you forecast the same for next weekend :-?

HTH,

Cheers, Alastair.
