from Martins excellent FAQ

"Provided the visibility is =10 km, AND the height of the lowest cloud (any
amount) is =5000 ft (or highest minimum sector altitude) AND there are no
cumulonimbus clouds (CB, any height) within sight AND there is no
significant weather (see list below), then the visibility and cloud part of
the standard METAR is replaced by CAVOK (say "cav-oh-kay": 'Ceiling And
Visibility OK'). (not used by certain countries, e.g. the United States)"

Default METARS + TAF's (HELP!)

Whilst researching for something else, I came upon the following
*superb* site dealing with METAR coding / decoding which might be of
interest. Although it is biased towards the US METAR code-form, it
covers all aspects of same (including the CAVOK that was the subject of
this thread).

http://www.met.tamu.edu/class/METAR/metar.html#GENERAL

(From the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Texas A&M University)

I am lost in admiration at the amount of information that the US put in
their METAR's, which follow-on from the days well before the 2nd WW when
even then US airfield reports were full of additional information.

Martin.
