I can't compete with the records aforementioned, but I have compared our
readings here in Tawfield (TF) with those from the old Beaufort Park (BP) when we had a few years of 'parallel running' (we are no more than 0.5mi away from BP). Over this period & all months/situations we were ~4% wetter than BP. Scaling our current total down by 4% means so far we have a *notional* BP total of 58mm (111%) Using BP records starting in 1971. The wettest August .... 127mm (1977) [ wettest *any* month .... 191mm (November 2002) ] So far, it has been the wettest August here since .... 2002 (70mm) If we beat that (TF would have to equal/exceed 73mm), then it will be the wettest August since 1999 (101mm/BP) Quite a few days to go, and there will certainly be some heavy rain, but for our small part of the country (and I realise we are most unusual atm), this August and indeed the summer as a whole, has not been anything out of the ordinary as regards total rainfall. Martin. Here in Chalfont St Giles, about 17 miles north of Bracknell, the total for the month so far (to 09z today) is 110.9 mm. Even so, it doesn't seem to have been a very wet month as much of the rain has come in sharp downpours. There's been plenty of sunny weather. In my records dating back to 1989 the August monthly totals have varied from the lowest of only 0.3 mm (1995) to a highest of 155.6 mm (1999). August rainfall shows a very large year-to-year variability here. Norman. -- Norman Lynagh Weather Consultancy 18 Kings Road Chalfont St Giles England tel: 01494 870220 |
