Apparently this summer has been a total wash-out and we've enjoyed fewer
impromptu BBQs than we usually would. Seems like the UK is now officially
part of the Mediterranean and summers like this one shouldn't be expected.

What is really annoying is that they are still peddling the "wettest
August on record" line. It seems that once media people have an idea in
their minds, it's impossible to remove it.

They'll be building wind farms in Essex and using them as scaffolds
for "gypos" if ITV has its way.

I would say overall, the summer has been about average.

..... and the fabulous warm, dry July has been eradicated from the equation.
I can remember summers when 21C was a "scorcher" with temperatures "soaring
" into the seventies!!

I reckon a good indicator of the overall summer conditions is the amount of
play possible in first class cricket. I follow a certain county based in
Birmingham (was a member for the 1st time back in 1953). Until the last
two weeks, there was virtually no disruption to play. The same would apply
to the test matches which were largely unaffected by rain.

.... glad you mentioned that. I had that feeling too (that the season for
cricket hadn't been too bad), but I don't follow the progress of matches
as avidly as might be: but I did feel that in previous "rotten" summers,
many matches at all levels (professional) were lost or truncated due to
rain / bad light. None of the Tests, for example, were 'decided' by the
weather, which is a good indicator. Only applies to England & South
Wales of course ;-)

Martin.

Hi Ian,
A cool summer for modern times though, that you have to accept?
