will the weather be more pleasant (i.e. not wet) around Spalding Yorkshire
or Cheltenham way?

It will fall on the day before Boxing Day.

Toss a coin - or else look at the climatological data to see which
region has more dry days in an average December (hopefully
www.meto.goc.uk will have the data on it somewhere). Even if an accurate
forecast could be made for the day that far in advance, which it can't,
you'd never get enough spatial resolution to answer a question like
yours.

18th Dec 16:40 = unstable highs. These are usually cold spells despite
the sun. 26th Dec 15:06 = thundery or at least warm and humid. 3rd Jan
17:46 = wet and windy. Wet and windy weather is usually warm. Warm
enough to snow though?

Crimbo looks favourite. (A cold spell followed by a warm one.)

I doubt it. It's rarely warm enough to snow in December in this country.

Why Cheltenham?

Alas, I can't help with a forecast though.

Possibly because I'll have consumed too much alcohol on that day.

Cheers, *hic*...

I should have one if I look out of my window that day ;-)

A brave man. But when you look at what he forecast this year so far, it is
quite impressive. In some respects I can see what he means by going for a
white Christmas as for several winters, the coldest spells have been between
Xmas and New Year. One just needs to be a little earlier.

Actually Christmas has had some fairly cold weather and possible snow on
quite a few occasions since 1990. 1991 was quite cold; 1993 was a white
Christmas with a veneer here early in the morning and several cms in Dorset
and parts of central southern England; Christmas Eve had fabulous rime
deposits all day in some places especially Chiltern country[see issue 1 of
Weather eye]; 1995 was very cold with snow on Boxing Day in Coulsdon and
severe blizzards occurred in Scotland over Christmas ; it was cold with
light snow in 1996;it was cold in 2000 with light sleet on Christmas Day;
there was sleet and snow on 25th and 26th in 2001 in many places including
Coulsdon, so not true that a white Christmas is not possible these days.
My forecast of a white Christmas 2004 was put on my web site in December
2003- a mild Christmas was forecast for 2003.
