![]() ================================================== ================== This posting expresses the personal view and opinions of the author. Something which everyone on this planet should be able to do. ================================================== ================== Haytor observing station is going automatic ! Yes I have just bought a wireless Vantage Pro Davis AWS. Hope to be up and running as soon as I have built an anemometer mast. So at last I will be able to measure my wind speeds instead of relying on Admiral Beaufort. The official climate records will still be done with the manual instruments as they are mounted in a Met Office standard UPVC Stevenson screen as opposed to the radiation shield on the Davis. It is going to be very interesting comparing the two systems. I would also like to say a big thank you to John Dann and his company Prodata found at www.weatherstations.co.uk . I ordered my VP on Monday. By Wednesday afternoon it had been delivered, all present and correct. A first class service from an excellent and helpful web site and company team. OK I may well get a tad excited with my [WRs] at times when the weather really sets in up here - you have been warned. Also, please don't expect any web displays, I am not on broadband (yet ?) and my PC is only connected at 38.4K when I dial in, so I haven't purchased the weatherlink software. But who knows ? :-) Cheers, Will. -- " A cup is most useful when it's attached to an anemometer spindle " ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A COL BH site in East Dartmoor at Haytor, Devon 310m asl (1017 feet). mailto: www: http://www.lyneside.demon.co.uk DISCLAIMER - All views and opinions expressed by myself are personal and do not necessarily represent those of my employer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |

Welcome to the "Anorak's" Will :-)
I'm only jealous you have a VP and yes John Dann continues to give advice even 4 to 5 years after you bought the gear. But who knows ? :-) Aw, go for it. Surely your not paying per minute call charges for net access are you? Looks at header, on Demon, I don't think they do a FRIACO service but you can use BT Surftime and get fully discounted (aka free calls) either 24/7 or during the evenings and weekends. I used Eves and Weekends Surftime with Demon on dialup for years. The BB arrived and I did the sums and found the you can get unlimited 24/7 free calls for less than the combined Demon and Surftime subs... Take a peak at Onetel, who I know have as my 24/7 backup ISP. Once you get rid of per minute call charges it doesn't matter if you connect at 300bps or 3Mbps. Apart from if someone wants to use the phone and you only have one line of course. B-) -- Cheers Dave. pam is missing e-mail |

Same here-just bought one but having annoying difficulty getting the aerial man in as determined to stick the anemometer at the gable end of a roof and sticking proud by 7 ft or so. I would do it myself but I want to make sure that the stuff stays up there in whatever weather. And the box of tricks will go at the base more or less flush with the roof ridge I think I am going to have the pole as the same type as on my SKY TV. The old (working) anemometer( WM11) was strapped on to a excellent al. pole which is a perfect fit for the white plastic sleeve on which the an. goes but I suspect the given U bolt is probably not long enough. When I have got this set up, another one is getting set up here just west of Dorchester. There is a hell of a lot of reading with all the lit attached...but I cannot really take a day off work at the moment. |

I forgot to mention that there seems to be a recording station down at Postbridge. I often visit the site to be honest as my guys train down on the moor. |

Excellent advice and service to match. Very rare in this day and age, particularly with such a large investment. Welcome to the club; I don't think you will be disappointed with the
station. I notice that you have not bought the Weatherlink softaware so presumably you do not have the logger and cannot download any data to your PC. There is a considerable amount of information available this way that is diifficult to access from the console. I transfer all of the data to Excel which allows me much more flexibility in looking at the data than the Weatherlink software permits. Wireless reception can be tricky and it is essential to find a good position for the console withe respect to the ISS. I movement of a few inches can have a dramatic effect on the reception. My units are about 20 metres apart and normally the reception is close to 100% but but once every few months I tend to lose readings completely for several hours for no obvious reason (RF interference?) so it is a good idea to look at the diagnostic readout regularly to check this aspect. The closer the two units are the better the results will be. I suspect that my rainguage tends to under read which could be a calibration problem or an exposure problem. I will be interested to see what your experience will be given that you already have a manual rainguage. Alan |

But who knows ? :-) Will, I am at the end of a very long BT landline, no hope of broadband ever and regularly get connections speeds of 33.6kps. But even at that, it still takes Weatherlink no more than 3 minutes to upload all the graphics it generates for the webpages. Regards, -- Chris www.thehendre.com (but being rebuilt) |

Over 6km and BT send an engineer round to change the faceplate on the master socket(*) to split the data from voice before it hits any internal extension wiring, this also avoids the need for micro filters on all connected analogue devices. I checked with BT website using my phone number and got the response: "Our initial test indicates that it is VERY UNLIKELY you will be able to receive Broadband from BT with speeds up to 512Kb due to the very long length of your telephone line." But I live in hope! -- Chris |
