Not quite. By definition, Beaufort forces refer to the mean wind speed,
not to gusts. What was the mean wind speed at the time?

Well short of 52mph here in Romsey... only 33mph in gusts so far.

There is a sort of scale for the higher gusts. While the mean speed
needs to reach 34kt (39mph) to become a Gale, gusts must reach
43kt (50mph) to be recognised as Gale force 8 gusts.

Aren't you talking about the criteria for issuing gale warnings? Not the
same thing.

.... shouldn't worry - Wetterzentrale still thinks it's Bracknell (after
13 months), and apparently WAFC charts are issued by somewhere called
London!
