Hatherleigh-Smyth writes Max gust 52mph Beaufort gale force nine. Squally showers. Not quite. By definition, Beaufort forces refer to the mean wind speed, not to gusts. What was the mean wind speed at the time? Norman. (delete "thisbit" twice to e-mail) -- Norman Lynagh Weather Consultancy Chalfont St Giles England |

It's interesting that forecast nowadays have given up on mean wind speeds.
Instead using gusts to sensationalise things. "Johnathan Hatherleigh-Smyth" John wrote in message ... "Norman Lynagh" wrote in message ... Hatherleigh-Smyth writes Max gust 52mph Beaufort gale force nine. Squally showers. Well short of 52mph here in Romsey... only 33mph in gusts so far. Not quite. By definition, Beaufort forces refer to the mean wind speed, not to gusts. What was the mean wind speed at the time? Norman. (delete "thisbit" twice to e-mail) There is a sort of scale for the higher gusts. While the mean speed needs to reach 34kt (39mph) to become a Gale, gusts must reach 43kt (50mph) to be recognised as Gale force 8 gusts.
