I can never understand this argument...
Split times between England and Scotland is just asking for unnecessary
confusion within media and transportation industries.

If the Scots want brighter mornings, then the simple answer is to the
Scotch to get up one hour later!

Scotch is a whisky.

Why wait until the end of March? Or maybe you're suggesting
clocks should go back at the start of September?

Strictly by day length that is what I meant. Yes it is probably a little
bit late doing it at the end of October.

However, with climate lagging behind day length by quite a margin you
still have people doing late summer activities well through September
and into October, so warmer weather outdoor pursuits still continue. Yes
they could start earlier, but seems to be the way most folk like it so
fine by me.

Changing the clocks in February to summer time would, weather wise, be a
nonsense. It is still a winter month whereas October is an autumn month.

So the existing system is a compromise, and is fine the way it is.

Putting clocks forward in mid February wouldn't affect anybody's
weather-related leisure activities, and would make the winter feel much
shorter. In accident prevention terms it would have the same benefits as
waiting to put them back until the end of October. As this is the "official"
reason we're given for messing with the clocks at all, what is the reason
for delaying the put-forward date until the end of March?

A lot of people here seem to have misunderstood the proposal, which is
simply that England and Wales could alter their clocks independently of
Scotland, and vice versa. No actual changes have been proposed. What this
would mean in practice, I would hope, is that down here we would be on GMT + 1
all year and the Scots could revert to GMT in the winter to obviate the dark
morning, if they wanted to. There should be no problem with having different
time zones - many countries have several, eg USA, Russia. It is far easier to
alter the clocks than to alter one's lifestyle and there is nothing God-given
about GMT; it's quite arbitrary. Let's have lighter winter evenings!

Sorry, I disagree. Asking people go to work one hour later (or earlier as
the case may be) is much less confusing than having a small nation such as
ours split into two timezones.

Just read this story:

Do we really want twilight to end at around 11:30 in June? I like
it dark when I go to bed!

I can see the advantage for the Winter months however.

Steve

I'm all for keeping things as they are now. For example, my middle
school kept hours of 9am to 3.30pm. It took me about 20 minutes to
make the walk, so with the current setup even in December it was
light enough to be safe by 8.40am and still light enough to be safe
at 3.50pm. An hour's change (in either direction, though I don't
imagine anyone's proposing GMT-1!) would have inevitably meant
walking one way in the dark. For me, the current system was by some
distance the safest.

It's about time we scrapped GMT. Personally I'm sick of going to work in the
dark, then finishing work in the dark. It can't be healthy to only see
natural light at the weekends.

I really do not care what the time reference is, I just wish that they
would leave it the same all year. It does nothing to change the number of
hours that are daylight and each year I seem to have more clocks to
change.

All my clocks and watch (& PC clock) reset themselves automatically, so no
forgetting to change them and ending up at work and hour early for me!

I have some clocks that do that but only a small percentage. By the way,
what's this thing "work"? :-)
