I quite like the AA spokesperson's advice in the BBC webpage, particularly
the one about skidding in the wet. Makes me wonder what will happen if we
*do* get a hard winter:

"The AA's Steve Neath said: "If you do experience aquaplaning, hold the
steering wheel lightly and lift off the throttle until the tyres regain
grip.
"Due to the changing weather conditions motorists will need to adjust
their speed accordingly. Skidding is nearly twice as likely to contribute
to road accidents in the wet as those in the dry."

He added: "If you do break down in heavy rain don't prop the bonnet open
while you wait for the patrol to arrive as the engine will be more
difficult to start again if the electrics are rain-soaked."

Looks like everyone has forgotten (or has never learnt) how to drive in
the wet. Come to think of it .......................

I thought Francis Wilson on Sky News gave a very balanced forecast this
afternoon. He emphasised that there was severe weather coming but also
emphasised that it was likely to be only SW England, South Wales and
parts of Ireland that would be seriously affected by the wind. From my
very incomplete study of various models that seems to me to be a very
realistic forecast.
