Has anyone any info about the blizzard that hit Poland last Friday?
Apparently there were mean wind speeds of 100km/h, widespread blackouts in
Silesia and 9 fatalities. Funny that there was nowt about it on the news or
the Met Office web page.

The surface chart for the day doesn't look that amazing, thoguh I guess
between 0000 on the 19th and 2400 there was a bit of action.

There is a picture on p. 28 of today's Guardian showing a flattened
woodland in Slovakia, where (it said) 90% of the commercial forestry had been
destroyed. It looked like the aftermath of the October 87 storm but for the
snow.
The Topkarten Archiv charts are only for 0000Z but one can deduce that a
deepening low moved rapidly eastwards over southern Poland during Friday with
probably very strong NW'lies in its rear. A great shame the 1200Z chart for
the 19th is not available.

I'm not sure if it's any use, but I've a T+12 850hPa chart from the 00z GFS
run on the 19th:

http://www.medvale.fsnet.co.uk/850_12z.gif

It shows quite a deep low over southern Poland and a considerable
temperature contrast too.

There is an HRPT image on my web site that may be of interest, for 1219Z on
the 19th directly over the developing Polish low

Is this the same low pressure that started as a wave on the south-ward
moving cold front over us causing our snow last week?

Yes Jeremy, it crossed the Uk as a wave depression during the 18th. It was
over the Midlands 1002 at 18/1800, and had deepened to 996 over Belgium by
19/0000.

Yes - hence my post at 23.26 GMT on Thursday 18th:

"Pouring with rain all evening in Brussels with a strong and squally wind at

Rain now positively torrential as I write ... "

This was Low Quimburga whose name we discussed in another thread.

A friend of mine arrived in Slovakia as the storm struck - he sent me this
link which has some pictures. I'm amazed we heard nothing about this.
