Default The gloom descends once again in High Wycombe!!

Well after being promised a sunny weekend by the BBC forecasters on Radio 4 both
yesterday and this morning, the gloom has once again descended here in High
Wycombe - just as it did yesterday!

Oh yes, as yesterday, the day dawned bright & clear; but within an hour of the
sun rising, just as it did yesterday, the high cloud formed in situ & now we
have YET ANOTHER gloomy day with 100% cloud cover.

To give an idea of how miserable it's been this last two months, last week
(which wasn't PARTICULARLY sunny) we saw more sunshine than we've seen in the
previous two months put together!

Although this year hasn't seen any record-breaking cold or precipitation, it has
been by far and away the most depressing year weatherwise I can ever remember.
We had a cold grey winter, followed by a cold, grey Spring; followed by the
second coolest, wettest summer I have experienced in over 40 years (Summer 1978
was colder, but sunnier and drier) followed by one of the gloomiest autumns
ever! Last Thursday the roads & pavements were actually dry for the first time
for over a month! If we get no precipitation today, it will be only the second
dry Sunday here since the end of August - the last one was back in mid October!

In fact there have been only 5 or so weeks of good weather here the whole of
this year: a week in April, two weeks in the second half of July and two weeks
in early September! The rest of the time we've had day after day of cold,
gloomy, damp weather. The one compensation was that on August 3rd we had the
best thunderstorm here for 15 years!

Let's hope 2005 will be brighter!

Nigel

Aagh! Every time I learn something new... it pushes something old out of my brain!

All I can say is that the above does not describe the weather this year in
St Albans. You surely must have had some good weather in June where up to
the 16th I had temperature maxima in excess of 25°C with 31.3°C recorded on
the 8th. The mean maximum for June, July and August were all in excess of
22°C and June and July were quite dry. August was wet however.

Although I like cold and snowy winters I also enjoy the outdoor life
particularly gardening and golf. Whilst we have had our fair share of gloom
here in S.Essex it has been one of the driest Autumns I can remember and has
extended the above activities which would normally be curtailed by sodden
clay at this time of year.

Ok Dave I'll give you we haven't had many active fronts crossing here this last
few weeks - but it's been very damp here and we have had numerous days of
intermittent fine drizzle. But even this last working week we had three days out
of five where we never saw the sun all day. Thursday was the sunniest day here
for over 5 weeks!

And yes, Alan: I had forgotten about those 2 nice weeks in June, but even so I
still stand by what I said: this has been the most depressing year of weather I
can ever remember! Also bear in mind that here on the Chilterns the mean
temperature is nearly always at least 3-4C lower than the surrounding area.
Yesterday for instance, the maximum here was just 4.5C - and not a moment's
sunshine either!

The sun has just broken through here after a clear and frosty night followed by
a gloomy dawn & morning.

It certainly descended back into gloom and drizzle here today after a bright
start. Had to put my car lights on at 2.00pm ! It's only the dryness I've
enjoyed and am certainly looking forward to the forthcoming changes.

In South Somerset it turned out to a glorious afternoon and a great
sunset so I stopped the motor near Somerton and took it all in. The
run back over the hills to Dorchester was good, too

I know about the Chilterns effect as I lived in Chesham at 150m for a few
years in the 1970s and on the few occasions we had snow it was much deeper
than in St Albans where I was working.

The maximum temperature here was only 5.6°C so it was not much warmer here
although the sun did come out for a while.
