Default Gravesend - it's official!

Hi all,
After an investigation, we've come to the conclusion that Gravesend is
an official site, properly sited over grass and away from buildings.
The confusion comes from the fact that the observations of weather,
cloud, etc are done from the rofftop, but the Stevenson screen is
properly located. Thus, yesterday's reading of 38.1C will be the new
official high for the UK.

Cheers,

Paul.

I'm not sure I understand this.
Why does there have to be an 'investigation'?
Surely there are a certain number of official sites in the UK, subject to all
the regulations and inspections, and thus able to return 'official' data,
either Gravesend is on this official list or it isn't?

When gravesend reports the highest temp in summer
on the bbc , its regarded as official straight out.
Yet when its a record at stake , it has to be investigated
and possibly thrown out.

MET OFFICE MAKE UP YOUR MIND

Gravesend was official there are no two ways about it!

It does seem odd.
If the Gravesend data is considered good enough on all the ordinary
days, then why can't it be taken in good faith on a day when a record
happens to be at stake?
It's as if they don't trust their own reporting stations...........

Eh ?! I've seen not seen or heard any official statement casting doubt on
the Gravesend reading. Looks like a lot of hot air to me !

Paul Knightley who started this thread suggested that there was an
investigation as to the validity of the site.

Yes, but Paul Knightly is associated with Torro, hence i presume it was a
Torro Investigation. ??

Fair enough Col, but it wasn't a Met Office investigation as was seemingly
implied. The Gravesend reading fitted in with surrounding obs and it has
been accepted without question.

Cheers,
Jon.

Does all this really matter? I could understand all the questioning if

there
was a million pounds at stake.

I think so Les. Gravesend has set the new benchmark and will in all
probability be referred to in the media for many years to come. Incidentally
I read the cost to the various betting organisations was in the region of
£500,000, thus I suspect the authenticity of the reports mattered to them !

Cheers,
Jon.
