Now that we are on O for Ophelia, and it's only the first week in September, what happens when we get to Z for Zoe and another storm pops up - do they cycle round again? .... I'm *not* sure if this is still the correct answer, but when this question came up many years ago (in another 'active' year), the answer posted by someone at the NHC in Miami was that the 'phonetic' alphabet would be used ... thus Alpha, Bravo, Charlie etc. No doubt we'll find out in the fullness of time! Names beginning with Q, U, X, Y and Z aren't used because there aren't enough names to go round. So the next names to be used this year will be Philppe, Rita, Stan, Tammy, Vince and Wilma. -- Jonathan Stott Canterbury Weather: http://www.canterburyweather.co.uk/ Reverse my e-mail address to reply by e-mail |

Have there ever been in the past? .... from the Hurricane FAQ ( http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/hrd/tcfaq/E11.html ) the highest number of Tropical Storms [since 1944] occurred in 1995 (19), so not triggering the 'secondary' list requirement in this basin.
