Now that we are on O for Ophelia, and it's only the first week in
September, what happens when we get to Z for Zoe and another storm pops
up - do they cycle round again?

.... I'm *not* sure if this is still the correct answer, but when this
question came up many years ago (in another 'active' year), the answer
posted by someone at the NHC in Miami was that the 'phonetic' alphabet
would be used ... thus Alpha, Bravo, Charlie etc. No doubt we'll find
out in the fullness of time!

Martin.

I've seen somewhere that they'll use the Greek alphabet.

.... yes, correct & my mistake; the *Greek* alphabet is used (not
phonetic as I wrote).

Also, they only use 21 names. Names beginning with Q, U, X, Y and Z
aren't used because there aren't enough names to go round. So the next
names to be used this year will be Philppe, Rita, Stan, Tammy, Vince and
Wilma.

Will the first storm be "Alpha" then, or also names as Aristotle or
Alexander (to recall some famous Greeks )?

.... as I understand it, the named storm following 'Wilma' would be
'Alpha', then 'Beta' etc. The question was raised (the first time it
came up - when we had the confusion between phonetic and greek), what
would happen if a hurricane from the 'secondary' list needed retiring?

Martin.

Second a "Vita"; And would our "Y"annis go for "gama" )?
Oh, well it would be excessive if it'll come to that many tropical storms?
Have there ever been in the past?

.... from the Hurricane FAQ

the highest number of Tropical Storms [since 1944] occurred in 1995
(19), so not triggering the 'secondary' list requirement in this basin.
