Default Avalon Harbor, Santa Catalina Island, CA 1988

During the frequent Santa Ana winds that occur in Southern California every
year the Catalina channel between the mainland and Catalina Island gets
pretty frothed up and can be a violent place. On the mainland we cuss the
wind and chop up the fallen trees and haul them off when it's over but on
Catalina nasty things can happen in the harbor.

This picture is by a local Catalina photographer - Bill Meister - in 1988.

In my "Immortal" Youth, I Body Surfed Santa Monica when the Beach was
closed due to high waves (caused by opposite effects of your Picture -
North East Bound Winds) that touched the bottom of the Santa Monica Pier.
Beach Closed No Problem, simply go to the end of the Pier and jump in! Also
did 2 rounds at the "Wedge" which will get the attention of even the most
"I'll Be Here Forever" "Dude". Back in the 60's there was a guy in a
wheelchair that'd sit and watch the waves and those that rode'em. On the
back of his Wheelchair was a sign that read "Victim of the Wedge". So as
"The Nothing Rideable", well some things just depend on your state of mind
;-)

AHHH A man after my own heart, spent many a day body surfing all
around Oahu.

editorial comment:::::::

Don,t much like our new President, but I got a thrill when I saw the
the photos of him, body surfing at Sandy Beach, Oahu lasyt year...
Sandy Beach has a short body slamming break, and a hard packed bottom,
NOT a beginners place....

Yeah but there's a difference between big surf and the kind of beach eroding
surf we sometimes get in the wintertime here that curls up and suddenly
crashes down. The water is filled with sand from the constant churn and has
an ugly blackness about it.

There is no joy in that kind of surf at all. There's no ride to it. It
just plants you on the bottom. Hard. And holds you down.

Been there. Done that. Lived to tell about it.
