Yup. It's taken from the beach in Holyrood, Newfoundland when a
northeast wind had driven the ice ashore. It sat around for a couple
days and hasn't been back.

Yup. It's taken from the beach in Holyrood, Newfoundland when a
northeast wind had driven the ice ashore. It sat around for a couple
days and hasn't been back.

I see. You were probably glad to see it go. Is it true that many
Newfoundlanders are cheered by the appearance of icebergs, because it
means that spring is on its way?

We haven't been to Holyrood but did go past south of it on the TCH a
couple of times. 4 to be exact.

Heh. Icebergs are a mixed blessing. They're beautiful to watch but if a
few get stuck off the narrows, a northeast wind can be brutal. We can
get bergs as late as July.

In the last two or three years, the number of bergs have been
incredible. Hundreds float by. I drove out to Bonavista and there were
dozens everywhere I looked. Everyday now, people are talking about bergs
off different parts of the Avalon.

A gift from the fast melting glaciers of Greenland.

I bet it is!

That's a different berg story from when we visited the Rock - there was
hardly a berg to be seen. There was a bergy bit in St. Lunaire harbor,
but that was it.

We visited Newfoundland in '04 and '05. We drove and took the ferry.
On the first trip we went up to L'Anse aux Meadows and over to St.
John's. The next year we went to Twillingate and then worked our way to
St. John's again, where we visited The Rooms, which I believe had just

Sounds like a great trip! I've yet to visit L'Anse aux Meadows and
Twillingate. The bergs are rarely around after May/June, but the last
two years (07,08) have been exceptional. I took those pics on 23 June 07
and some of the bergs hung around well into July. The tourists were
thrilled.

It can take up to two years for the bergs to make their way south, so
those bergs likely calved during the very hot 2005 season. While we're
getting immense numbers of bergs, the sea ice has been nil around the
Avalon.
