We didn't have winter at the beginning of 1977, 1997, 2000 or 2002, and each of those summers melted my shoes to manhole covers. 1997 was a *really* bad summer, I ended up so tanned and sunburned I had to get a new driver's license because everybody thought I had stolen some Mexican immigrant's license from the photo and was peeling until Thanksgiving. Where are you living? The only really hot summers I remember are 1977 (mid valley) and 1992 (here). This year will probably be bad, as we're still waiting for winter (and no, that 40 hours of ice we had counts as fall weather, not winter). |

Not always. I remember at least one El Nino summer in the 80s where we started with about 40 hours of ice, then nothing more. jrw This year will probably be bad, as we're still waiting for winter (and no, that 40 hours of ice we had counts as fall weather, not winter). |

When we moved from Portland to Phoenix we left a whole garden full of green tomatoes getting ready to ripen. Knowing that I was going to miss fresh tomatoes I bought a vine here and put it in a big pot. The sucker survived the winter and has buds on it now. Man, is it weird here. |

You have not lived in Oregon very long ![]() Well, we don't very often see our ski resorts closed down in the middle of February for lack of snow. If anyone misses Oregon weather, come to Arizona. The ski resorts have thick bases of snow and it's been rainy steady for the last two days here in Phoenix, with more to come. We've had so much rain that the muddy water flowing into the city is beyond the ability of the water purification plants to handle it and we couldn't drink tap water here for almost a week. It's definately going to be a brutally dry summer. Right now it's probably more like summer in Portland than winter. I am enjoying it though. |

Portland usually gets hotter than LA for a couple weeks this summer, usually late July through early August. I'm thinking probably late June to mid-October this year, one of those years when it really pays off to get a Sauvie Island parking permit. -- Paul Johnson http://ursine.ca/~baloo/ |

I know what the weather is like in Portland. My point was that I didn't mean that Phoenix now was like Portland in the winter. We have had over a third of our normal yearly rainfall as L.A. has. At least we don't get mudslides like they do, but the flash floods can be just as bad. I do remember how hot it was in 2000. Lots of ninety degree days. Portland summers are worsened by the humidity, but they still don't get anywhere near as bad here. |
