When are you moving to Canada? You asked before and yet, it's still the wrong question. The right question you should be asking me if you want me to move to Canada in the forseeable future is, "Who do you want me to hire as your immigration attorney, Mr. Johnson?" Here's a quarter. Hire a Canadian. Sorry, buster, it takes a hell of a lot more than a quarter to hire an attorney in the industrialized world. Call me when you're serious. -- Paul Johnson http://ursine.ca/~baloo/ |

You have not lived in Oregon very long ![]() Well, we don't very often see our ski resorts closed down in the middle of February for lack of snow. It's definately going to be a brutally dry summer. It happens. One of my aides ended up staying in Oregon because she and her husband (ski bums at the time) ended up in Oregon during 1976-77. The plan was to work at the ski resorts that winter and then go to Alaska. Problem was, that was the year there was no snow. None of the resorts opened. They ended up staying here instead. Our gain, as they're pretty nice folks. Meanwhile, it's weird when the mountain is warmer than the valley. My new Subie has an outdoor thermometer, and while it's not completely accurate, it's close enough to tell me that the last week or so, I've had mornings where Welches is warmer than SE Portland. Weird. No, actually, it's just a temperature inversion. And, despite reports, there was night skiing Friday night.... jrw |

We didn't have winter at the beginning of 1977, 1997, 2000 or 2002, and each of those summers melted my shoes to manhole covers. 1997 was a *really* bad summer, I ended up so tanned and sunburned I had to get a new driver's license because everybody thought I had stolen some Mexican immigrant's license from the photo and was peeling until Thanksgiving. Not always. I remember at least one El Nino summer in the 80s where we started with about 40 hours of ice, then nothing more. jrw This year will probably be bad, as we're still waiting for winter (and no, that 40 hours of ice we had counts as fall weather, not winter). |

Portland usually gets hotter than LA for a couple weeks this summer, usually late July through early August. I'm thinking probably late June to mid-October this year, one of those years when it really pays off to get a Sauvie Island parking permit. You must be an immigrant. jrw |

It would be stupid to expect no cycles at all. The difference is that some people want to use this fact to micromanage people and engage in more social engineering. People can't even begin to influence these cycles as much as the micromanagers want to believe. And if the latter really cared, they wouldn't support a treaty (Kyoto) that permitted China and the all of the third world to burn coal. Bob T |
