1880's there has never been a period with as many mild and dry winters
as there has been in the last 10 years.There also has never been so
many consecutive months of below-average precipitation as in the
last 5 years.
The number of 80 and 90+ temps.and drought summers are on the
increase as well.
Even if this is a relatively short cycle on a geological time
scale,it could still be centuries long.

Well, we don't very often see our ski resorts closed down in the middle of
February for lack of snow. It's definately going to be a brutally dry
summer.

It happens.

One of my aides ended up staying in Oregon because she and her husband
(ski bums at the time) ended up in Oregon during 1976-77. The plan
was to work at the ski resorts that winter and then go to Alaska.

Problem was, that was the year there was no snow. None of the resorts
opened. They ended up staying here instead. Our gain, as they're
pretty nice folks.

Meanwhile, it's weird when the mountain is warmer than the valley. My
new Subie has an outdoor thermometer, and while it's not completely
accurate, it's close enough to tell me that the last week or so, I've
had mornings where Welches is warmer than SE Portland.

Weird. No, actually, it's just a temperature inversion.

And, despite reports, there was night skiing Friday night....

Perhaps it is. It would be stupid to expect no cycles
at all. The difference is that some people want to
use this fact to micromanage people and engage in
more social engineering. People can't even begin to
influence these cycles as much as the micromanagers
want to believe. And if the latter really cared, they
wouldn't support a treaty (Kyoto) that permitted
China and the all of the third world to burn coal.
