Algorithms:
A step-by-step problem-solving procedure, especially an established, recursive computational procedure for solving a problem in a finite number of steps. A procedure consisting of a sequence of algebraic formulas and/or logical steps to calculate or determine a given task. Most people know that the origin of modern computing was the battle of decoding messages intercepted by the opposing factions of WWII. A lot know that the next step in their evolution ran current to that in ballistics. Actually ballistics was a major concern to the scientists at Lecol Normal in the time of Napoleon. And before then Newton and Leibniz introduced the concept of step by step analysis of curves that has become Astrometry. So it is not surprising that the second major fact about early modern computing is that their development was the search for better and better algorithms to solve military problems. Coupled with tactics and logistics is the use of supercomputers to solve weather tendencies. The major problem with such uses is that algorithms do not explain how certain things occur. They are more concerned with probabilities than facts. Pity it is a dead end street. |
