Default Alkaline Batteries

A few days ago, my 7-year-old battery-powered wall clock died.
When I brought it to the clock shop, the lady opened the casing and
seeing the single Duracell battery inside told me "Do not use alkaline
battery. Ordinary battery will do and will not kill your clock work"

Is she telling me an old wife's tale?
Or is there some technical merit to this?

I would suggest you use NiMH batteries,
every 3 months, take it out and recharge.
Recharge onlt takes 2 hrs.

No need to wait untill all charge finish only then recharge,
no most charger can auto stop charge when the batteries is full.
unlike the old charger which depend on timer to stop charge.
