Default Skiing At Tahoe?

Winter Storm Watch

Check out the forcast for thursday night, wind gusts to 125 MPH, has anyone
ever heard of these kind of winds outside of a hurricane? I know Mt.
Washington is famous for it's winds as there was a gust of 230 MPH one time
but even 125 is a cat 3 hurricane, or, more accurate, sustained winds will
probably be at cat 1 or 2 strength. Still, imagine trying to ski or board
in those kind of winds! Put a hang glider on and you might end up in the
Pacific!

This Afternoon: Partly sunny, with a temperature falling to around 35 by
5pm. Windy, with a southwest wind around 30 mph, with gusts as high as 65
mph.

Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 23. Windy, with a south wind
between 30 and 35 mph, with gusts as high as 85 mph.

Thursday: A 50 percent chance of snow after 4pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high
near 30. Very windy, with a southwest wind 35 to 40 mph increasing to
between 45 and 50 mph. Winds could gust as high as 90 mph.

Thursday Night: Periods of snow, mainly after 10pm. Low around 27. Strong
and damaging winds, with a southwest wind 50 to 55 mph increasing to between
60 and 65 mph. Winds could gust as high as 125 mph. Chance of precipitation
is 100%.

Friday: Periods of snow. High near 33. Strong and damaging winds, with a
south wind 60 to 65 mph decreasing to between 40 and 45 mph. Winds could
gust as high as 125 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%.

Friday Night: Periods of snow. Low around 16. Very windy. Chance of
precipitation is 100%.

Saturday: Periods of snow, mainly before 10am. High near 21. Chance of
precipitation is 80%.

Sustained wind speeds not gusts are what they consider for the Saffir
Simpson scale.

The ideal is confused since the storm track will have a variety of
speeds along its front and the lee winds will be much more subdued.

So the older records from times before modern satellite telemetry are
not consistent.

Yes and many of the passes are experiencing sustained winds of over 90MPH
right now, I know what the scale means. It's just interesting, some places
have recording gusts of well over 160MPH, sustained or not, that's a lot of
wind for a storm that isn't a tropical cyclone.

Proof, since you seem to feel the need to argue every time I post something
weather related. This is for a point about 20 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe
at an elevation of around 9,000 feet. The NOAA has pin-point forcasts:

Blizzard Warning
Special Weather Statement

This Afternoon: Periods of snow. The snow could be heavy at times.
Temperature falling to around 26 by 5pm. Strong and damaging winds, with a
south wind 90 to 95 mph decreasing to between 85 and 95 mph. Winds could
gust as high as 150 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow
accumulation of 26 to 32 inches possible.

Tonight: Periods of snow. The snow could be heavy at times. Low around 23.
Strong and damaging winds, with a southwest wind 85 to 95 mph decreasing to
between 55 and 60 mph. Winds could gust as high as 135 mph. Chance of
precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 23 to 29 inches possible.
